Read This Now: David Cain – Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed

David Cain is a personal hero of mine. I don’t know what it is about him but whatever he writes, I fall in love with him. He’s so ZEN and his words make so much sense and most of all, they make you think. Like, REALLY make you think, not just be like, “Cool story bro.” He says a lot of things we are afraid to say and I think that’s why I admire him so much.

This article, posted on Thought Catalog, is pretty intriguing once you get through it. A well-travelled man, Cain brings in his own experiences abroad to support his points, this one being the overwhelming consumeristic nature of Western society.

We buy stuff to cheer ourselves up, to keep up with the Joneses, to fulfill our childhood vision of what our adulthood would be like, to broadcast our status to the world, and for a lot of other psychological reasons that have very little to do with how useful the product really is. How much stuff is in your basement or garage that you haven’t used in the past year?

His connections are pretty valid and I think this article is a fascinating look under the microscope for the lives we lead every day. How many of us spend money just because we have it? How many of us find ourselves choosing between things we enjoy because we don’t have time to experience it all based on our work schedules? Or spending more on one crazy experience because we don’t have the time to enjoy the simpler things day-to-day?

Since the moment I was offered the job, I’ve been markedly more careless with my money. Not stupid, just a little quick to pull out my wallet. As a small example, I’m buying expensive coffees again, even though they aren’t nearly as good as New Zealand’s exceptional flat whites, and I don’t get to savor the experience of drinking them on a sunny café patio. When I was away these purchases were less off-handed, and I enjoyed them more.
